Businessmen Winslow S. Pierce and Almus E. Vinton moved to Indianapolis in the 1850s. In 1875 the families were linked by marriage when Pierce's son Henry D. married Vinton's daughter Elizabeth. Henry and Elizabeth had two children, Theresa and Henry Douglas Jr. The family gained prominence in business and politics, and was active in local clubs and organizations.
